Mangosteen is a small fruit about the size of a tangerine. The outside rind or pericarp is leathery with scars and scrapes. This outer rind helps protect a delicious inner pulp which has been described as the best tasting fruit on the planet. Mangosteens grow on small trees in and around Malaya, Thailand and Burma. The mangosteen fruit usually grows in clusters of 3 to 9 fruits and is dark purple in color. The Mangosteen tree is a slow growing and small, typically between 20 ft to 82 Ft height and the tree only bears fruit twice a year.
Mangosteen has been so revered in the past that Queen Victoria once stated that anyone that brought her a fresh supply of mangosteen would instantly become a knight. Other cultures refer to the mangosteen fruit as "Queen of Fruits" or Fruit of the Gods".
